Week ending 9th Jan 2011

The latest match in the pike series was switched to Broom Lake as the adjacent river was rising rapidly and carrying down lots of rubbish.  Four out of the six anglers managed to catch pike with Bryan Lancaster winning with 3 pike to 6lb 4oz for a total weight of 17lb 4oz, and 3 series points.  Second place was secured by Tony Moir with two pike to 6lb 6oz for a total weight of 10lb 2oz (2 points) and third place taken by Steve Jepps with 3 small pike for a total weight of 6lb 8oz (1 point).  Junior member Tom Godfrey landed a pike of 4lb 4oz for fourth place.  With the best three results counting towards the series trophy the current standings are led by Bryan Lancaster (7 point) with Steve Jepps and Kevin Williams joint second on 5 points.  Earlier in the week anglers had reported catching reasonable numbers of silver fish from the lake, with small perch being the dominant species.  Willington Lake has only just started to thaw but should finally be ice free by the weekend.  Anglers fishing the adjacent stretch of the river have reported catching odd chub, with the old lock channel providing a good fish holding area when the main river is flooded.  The next club match to be held at the Airman Pit on 23rd January  is part of the predator series, where it is the turn of pike to be the target species, details available from Neil Bygrave (07980 533860).

Week ending 2nd Jan 2011

In spite of the rise in temperatures, all stillwaters have remained covered in ice and unfishable, but they will hopefully finally thaw out by this weekend.  Reports from the rivers have been slowly filtering in.  Alan Lawrence landed a magnificent specimen chub of 6lb 2oz from an undisclosed club water just before the arrival of the snow, which is the biggest reported this season.  Whilst the snow was on the ground, Kevin Williams spent an overnight session on the weir pool at Little Paxton and landed three zander on small deadbaits.  Kevin also suffered many dropped runs throughout the night before finally running out of deadbaits.  Kevin has fished Broom River in recent days and landed several perch up to 3lb.  This coming Sunday 9th January will see the next round of the pike series held on the Broom River section of the River Ivel, details available from Bryan Lancaster (07810 454819).
